Prince Albert II Inaugurates 6,000-Square-Metre Grimaldi Forum Extension Integrated into Monaco's Mareterra Eco-District
Architectural and Engineering Triumph Expands Monaco's Premier Cultural Hub
LARVOTTO, Monaco — In a sovereign ceremony celebrating architectural elegance, international business tourism, and sustainable civil engineering, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II and Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene have officially inaugurated the monumental 6,000-square-metre extension of the Grimaldi Forum Monaco. Coinciding with the prestigious venue's 25th anniversary celebrations, the multi-million-euro project seamlessly embeds Monaco’s premier congress and cultural palace directly into Mareterra—the Principality’s groundbreaking six-hectare offshore eco-district reclaimed from the Mediterranean Sea.
Conceived under the direct patronage of Prince Albert II, the expansion represents one of the most sophisticated underground and marine structural engineering feats in modern Mediterranean architecture. Executed by international architects Valode & Pistre in collaboration with Mareterra master planner Renzo Piano, the project expands the Grimaldi Forum toward the open sea without encroaching on sensitive underwater marine reserves, uniting high environmental quality with premier exhibition capacity.
Boosting Usable Exhibition Capacity by 50% with Modular High-Tech Spaces
The expansion increases the Grimaldi Forum’s total indoor modular exhibition, trade fair, and convention capacity by an extraordinary 50 percent, adding approximately 6,000 square metres of versatile, high-ceilinged floor space alongside 2,000 square metres of exterior landscaped terraces. The extension introduces three signature event zones:
- Pinède Hall: A monumental 4,145-square-metre pillarless exhibition cavern capable of hosting massive international trade pavilions, automobile debuts, and sovereign gala dinners.
- Expanded Diaghilev Gallery: A redesigned, high-throughput corridor providing seamless subterranean pedestrian movement between legacy congress halls and the new oceanfront wing.
- Émeraude Forecourt & Terraces: Luminous outdoor plazas and dining concourses offering dramatic, unobstructed views across the Mediterranean seascape toward Cap Martin.
The new halls feature state-of-the-art acoustic paneling, motorized overhead rigging grids, modular movable acoustic partitions, and ultra-high-density 5G digital networking grids, enabling simultaneous multi-track international conferences, symphonic performances, and live global broadcasts.
BREEAM and HQE Excellent Environmental Certifications Powered by Solar Energy
In strict compliance with Prince Albert II’s statutory directives on carbon neutrality and sustainable construction, the Grimaldi Forum expansion achieved the highest international environmental honors, including BREEAM and HQE (Haute Qualité Environnementale) Excellent certifications. The structure is built with low-carbon maritime concrete and high-performance thermal insulation that minimizes seasonal heat exchange.
The building’s energy footprint is anchored by a massive 2,500-square-metre rooftop photovoltaic solar power plant comprising 1,500 high-efficiency solar panels generating over 640,000 kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually. Heating, ventilation, and cooling are powered exclusively by connection to Monaco’s pioneering thalassothermal seawater heat-pump network, utilizing the stable thermal inertia of deep Mediterranean waters to provide emissions-free cooling and heating year-round.
Reinforcing Monaco's Position as a Global Leader in MICE Business Tourism
Government ministers, diplomatic dignitaries, and international event organizers underscored that the Grimaldi Forum expansion serves as an indispensable economic driver for the Principality. Attracting over 250,000 business delegates and cultural attendees annually, the expanded venue will generate substantial commercial revenues across Monaco's luxury hospitality, gastronomy, and retail sectors.
With bookings already locked in years in advance for global green tech summits, financial symposiums, and fine arts exhibitions, the expanded Grimaldi Forum stands as an enduring emblem of Monegasque innovation—where sovereign heritage, architectural brilliance, and eco-responsibility unite on the shores of the Mediterranean.
