Monaco Inaugurates Landmark €2 Billion Mareterra Eco-District Adding Six Hectares of Mediterranean Coastal Living
An Audacious Engineering Triumph Expanding Monaco by 3 Percent
LARVOTTO, Monaco — Marking a transformative historical milestone for the Principality, H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, accompanied by Princess Charlene and the Princely Family, has officially inaugurated the landmark €2 billion Mareterra eco-district. Delivered six months ahead of schedule after a decade of meticulous planning and maritime engineering, the monumental offshore land reclamation project adds 6 hectares (60,000 square metres) of newly created territory into the Mediterranean Sea, expanding Monaco’s total surface area by approximately 3 percent.
Engineered by French maritime contractor Bouygues Travaux Publics and SAM L'Anse du Portier, Mareterra rests upon a subterranean maritime foundation of 18 colossal concrete caissons, each weighing 10,000 metric tons. Positioned 20 metres deep upon the seabed, these hollow structures form a robust, earthquake-proof, and wave-dissipating belt that safeguards the new district against Mediterranean swells and sea level rise while preserving adjacent marine ecosystems.
Masterpiece Architecture by Renzo Piano and Denis Valode
The architectural vision for Mareterra was brought to life by Pritzker Prize-winning Italian architect Renzo Piano (Renzo Piano Building Workshop) alongside renowned French architect Denis Valode (Valode & Pistre) and landscape maestro Michel Desvigne. Seamlessly integrated between the Grimaldi Forum and Larvotto Beach, the district blends curved maritime silhouettes with warm natural stone, untreated timber, and expansive glazed facades.
The development encompasses 110 ultra-luxury residences situated within Piano’s floating residential masterpiece Le Renzo, 10 prestigious waterfront villas, and four boutique townhouses. During the inaugural ceremony, Prince Albert II unveiled royal dedication plaques establishing the Place Princesse Gabriella, the Esplanade et Promenade Prince Jacques, and the Piscine Princesse Charlène—a heated outdoor seawater Olympic-standard swimming facility overlooking the Mediterranean.
World-Leading Eco-Credentials Powered by Thalassothermal Networks
Mareterra was designed from its inception to fulfill the world's most rigorous environmental standards, securing HQE Exceptionnel, BREEAM Excellent, and BiodiverCity certifications. One hundred percent of the district’s heating and cooling demands are supplied through zero-emission thalassothermal energy networks (seawater heat pumps), completely eliminating reliance on fossil fuels.
Over 4,500 square metres of rooftop solar photovoltaic panels generate clean electricity on-site, complemented by automated rainwater collection systems that irrigate the district's lush public green spaces. At the heart of Mareterra lies a sprawling one-hectare Mediterranean pine forest featuring more than 1,000 mature native trees, including umbrella pines, olive groves, and cypress trees, creating an urban oasis and microclimate cooling buffer.
A Pedestrian Sanctuary with 16-Berth Marina and Marine Bio-Huts
Conceived as a 100 percent pedestrian sanctuary, Mareterra eliminates private vehicular traffic from its surface. Instead, the district features 21,000 square metres of tranquil pedestrian walkways, coastal esplanades, and 600 metres of dedicated cycle tracks, supported by subterranean service corridors equipped with 200 smart electric vehicle charging bays.
The centerpiece of the waterfront is Le Petit Portier, an intimate 16-berth private marina fringed by artisan boutiques and gourmet dining verandas. To safeguard marine life, engineers installed hundreds of artificial Biohut nurseries and transplanted Neptune seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) beds along the underwater caisson slopes, establishing a thriving breeding habitat for local fish species. Mareterra stands as a global testament to how visionary urban expansion can harmoniously coexist with pristine marine ecology.
