Western Australia Delivers $1.65 Billion METRONET Ellenbrook Rail Line with Five Accessible Stations Across 21 Kilometres
Historic Infrastructure Milestone for Perth's Expanding North-Eastern Suburbs
PERTH, Western Australia — In the single largest expansion of Western Australia's passenger railway network in nearly two decades, the Western Australian Government and METRONET have achieved practical completion and operational commissioning on the landmark $1.65 billion Ellenbrook Line (Morley-Ellenbrook Line Project). Spanning 21 kilometres of newly constructed dual electrified railway tracks from Bayswater through the heart of the northeastern corridor, the transformative rail project fulfills a long-standing commitment to bring rapid mass transit to one of Perth’s fastest-growing population centers.
Engineered and delivered by the MELconnx Consortium—spearheaded by global infrastructure contractor Laing O'Rourke—the line branches off the Midland Line at the upgraded Bayswater Station, running along the median of Tonkin Highway before terminating in Ellenbrook. Commuters will experience a direct, seamless journey from Ellenbrook to the Perth Central Business District in just 30 minutes, effectively cutting peak-hour highway commute times nearly in half.
Five Brand-New Architectural Stations with Multimodal Interchange Hubs
The 21-kilometre alignment introduces five state-of-the-art, fully accessible stations: Morley Station, Noranda Station, Ballajura Station, Whiteman Park Station, and the northern terminus at Ellenbrook Station. Each station features iconic modular architectural canopies designed by Woods Bagot, dynamic digital passenger information displays, CCTV security surveillance, and integrated public artworks celebrating the cultural heritage of the Whadjuk Noongar people.
To promote seamless multi-modal connectivity, the stations are paired with extensive bus feeder interchanges and modern commuter amenities. The line provides more than 3,300 park-and-ride parking bays across the route, alongside secure bike storage shelters and dedicated pedestrian walkways. Notably, Whiteman Park Station provides direct, eco-friendly transit access to one of Western Australia’s premier conservation and recreation destinations, linking urban families directly to regional nature reserves.
Locally Assembled C-Series Electric Trains and Clean Energy Grid Integration
Passenger services on the Ellenbrook Line are operated utilizing Western Australia’s new fleet of Alstom C-series six-car electric multiple units (EMUs), manufactured and assembled locally at the Bellevue Railcar Facility. Boasting a passenger capacity of up to 1,200 riders per train, the high-efficiency trainsets feature regenerative braking systems, spacious accessible seating, USB charging portals, and advanced climate control engineered for Western Australia’s summer conditions.
Fares on the new line are fully capped under Transperth's affordable two-zone ticketing framework, providing cost-effective mass transit for working families and students. By replacing an estimated thousands of individual vehicular trips along Tonkin Highway and surrounding arterial corridors every day, the electric rail spur dramatically decreases regional greenhouse gas emissions and vehicle congestion.
Catalyst for Transit-Oriented Communities and Economic Opportunity
Western Australian transport ministers and urban planners highlighted that the METRONET Ellenbrook Line serves as a vital economic catalyst, having supported over 6,500 local jobs throughout engineering, track-laying, and station construction phases. The infrastructure unlocked comprehensive Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) precincts around Morley, Noranda, and Ellenbrook, paving the way for multi-storey residential apartments, retail centers, and medical hubs.
Representing a nation-building asset delivered ahead of schedule, the Ellenbrook Line sets a contemporary gold standard for integrated public mobility, connecting Western Australia's outer suburban communities directly with employment, education, and cultural hubs across Greater Perth.
