Perth Commuters Benefit from Modernized METRONET Armadale Line and Eight-Kilometre Byford Rail Extension Across Southeastern Suburbs
Delivering the Largest Rail Transformation in Western Australia’s History
PERTH, Western Australia — In a generational achievement for public transportation in Western Australia, the Cook Labor Government, alongside METRONET and the Public Transport Authority (PTA), is recording surging commuter ridership following the full operational rollout of the upgraded Armadale Line and the landmark eight-kilometre Byford Rail Extension. Representing the most complex engineering retrofit of an active passenger railway in Western Australia’s history, the multi-billion-dollar program has replaced century-old level crossings with elevated rail viaducts and state-of-the-art transit stations.
Extending passenger rail connectivity eight kilometres south from Armadale to the newly established town centre of Byford in the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale, the project delivers direct electric train service to one of the fastest-growing residential regions in the nation. Commuters now travel seamlessly to the Perth central business district in approximately 42 minutes, eliminating long highway commutes along the congested South Western Highway.
Elevated Rail Viaducts and Thirteen Level Crossings Removed
A centerpiece of the Armadale Line transformation was the removal of 13 dangerous and congested level crossings through Victoria Park and Cannington via long-span elevated rail structures. By hoisting trainsets above major arterial roads such as Welshpool Road, Hamilton Street, and Wharf Street, the project has completely unblocked road traffic bottlenecks, dramatically boosted vehicular flow, and permanently eliminated collision risks for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Beneath the elevated rail structures, urban renewal teams have converted the former rail reserve into more than six hectares of vibrant, landscaped public open spaces. Featuring continuous shared walking and cycling paths, nature playgrounds, youth skate plazas, and native tree plantings, the linear parklands seamlessly reunite previously divided suburban neighborhoods.
Seven Brand-New Stations Engineered with Universal Accessibility
The project delivered seven brand-new, architecturally striking railway stations: Carlisle, Oats Street, Queens Park, Cannington, Beckenham, Armadale, and Byford. Each station complex is engineered to top-tier universal accessibility standards, boasting step-free elevator access, sheltered boarding platforms, extensive CCTV security surveillance, and integrated multi-bay bus interchanges that streamline suburban feeder connections.
The modernized rail corridor is powered by upgraded 25kV overhead traction electrification and advanced computerized signaling, allowing Transperth to operate high-capacity six-car C-series electric trains with precision frequency during morning and evening rush hours.
Unlocking Sustainable Regional Economic Growth
Western Australian leadership emphasized that the completion of the Byford extension and Armadale rail corridor delivers lasting economic dividends. By pairing rapid transit infrastructure with transit-oriented commercial and residential development nodes around every station, Perth has firmly established a modern, highly sustainable passenger transport network built for future population growth.
