A Generational 6-Hectare Land Reclamation Feat on the Mediterranean

LARVOTTO, Monaco — In a historic achievement for sovereign maritime engineering and sustainable urbanism, the Prince’s Government of Monaco, under the official aegis of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II, has celebrated the completion and handover of the monumental €2 billion Mareterra eco-district (L'Anse du Portier). Extending the sovereign microstate’s territory by six hectares (15 acres) into the Mediterranean Sea along the scenic Larvotto coastline, the ambitious project stands as one of the most environmentally certified land extensions ever undertaken globally.

Engineered upon a foundation of 18 giant concrete caissons positioned upon a meticulously prepared maritime embankment, Mareterra expands Monaco's surface area by three percent. Conceived from its inception as a fully pedestrianized green haven, the new district harmonizes ultra-luxury residential living, public cultural spaces, and cutting-edge ecological preservation without disturbing surrounding marine sanctuaries.

Master Architectural Vision by Renzo Piano and Michel Desvigne

The architectural master plan was realized through an international collaboration between Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW), Valode & Pistre Architectes, and renowned landscape architect Michel Desvigne. The centerpiece residential structure, Le Renzo, hovers elegantly above the coastline on slender pilotis, featuring sweeping cantilevered balconies and panoramic glazing that captures Mediterranean daylight while framing views of the iconic Monaco Rock.

The public realm introduces the sprawling Princess Charlene Promenade, an oceanfront pedestrian pathway linking the Larvotto beach resort directly to the Grimaldi Forum and central Monte Carlo. Landscaped with more than 800 mature Mediterranean pine trees, olive groves, and coastal flora, Mareterra’s one-hectare public park provides shaded walking corridors and tranquil children's nature spaces cooled by ocean breezes.

World-Class Ecological Standards and Marine Energy Integration

Setting a global benchmark for carbon-conscious development, Mareterra achieves HQE Aménagement, BREEAM Excellent, and BiodiverCity environmental certifications. The district is powered almost entirely by clean renewable energy, anchored by 4,500 square metres of rooftop solar photovoltaic pergolas and an advanced closed-loop seawater thermal heat pump network.

The marine energy system extracts thermal energy from the Mediterranean to provide 100% of the heating and air conditioning for all residences, eliminating fossil-fuel emissions entirely. In the adjacent marine waters, marine biologists constructed artificial coral reefs, posidonia sea grass nurseries, and acoustic dampening zones, preserving local marine biodiversity and marine life corridors throughout the entire construction lifecycle.

Exemplifying Monaco’s Sustainable Sovereign Prosperity

Monegasque state dignitaries, civic planners, and business leaders emphasized that the delivery of Mareterra represents a triumph of sovereign vision, fiscal strength, and environmental responsibility. By expanding precious territory through world-class green engineering, Monaco reinforces its standing as a premier global beacon for sustainable luxury, modern architectural elegance, and responsible marine stewardship.
