Monaco Accelerates Port Hercule Clean Energy Transition with High-Power Shore Electrification and Rapid Zero-Emission Bus Deployments
Decarbonizing Maritime Operations at the Capital of Yachting
LA CONDAMINE, Monaco — In an ambitious acceleration of its national decarbonization roadmap, the Prince’s Government of Monaco, under the high guidance of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II, has enacted decisive infrastructure advancements to eliminate emissions across its maritime gateway. Working in coordination with the Société d’Exploitation des Ports de Monaco (SEPM) and the Department of Maritime Affairs, the Principality is expanding high-power shore-to-ship electrical connections (quayside electrification) across the deep-water moorings of Port Hercule.
The advanced quayside electrical installations allow large luxury superyachts, cruise vessels, and commercial tenders to plug directly into Monaco's municipal clean energy grid while berthed. By connecting to high-voltage shore power, vessels can shut down auxiliary diesel generators entirely, eliminating thousands of tons of local carbon emissions, sulfur dioxides, and nitrogen oxides while completely eradicating generator engine noise across the picturesque Condamine amphitheater.
Electrifying Urban Public Mobility with Mercedes-Benz eCitaro Buses
The maritime green transition unfolds concurrently with rapid progress in domestic public transportation. The Compagnie des Autobus de Monaco (CAM) is accelerating toward its binding target of operating a 100 percent zero-emission battery-electric bus fleet by 2030. Following recent deliveries of custom-engineered Mercedes-Benz eCitaro fully electric buses, zero-emission vehicles now comprise the majority of the municipal transit fleet operating across Monaco's primary urban arteries, including high-frequency routes 3 and 5.
The electric buses are uniquely adapted to Monaco's demanding coastal topography, featuring advanced battery configurations paired with heavy-duty regenerative braking systems. During steep descents from the Jardin Exotique down toward Port Hercule, the vehicles capture kinetic braking energy to recharge onboard batteries, significantly extending daily operating range without mid-route charging delays.
Integration with the SMEG Renewable Grid and Microgrid Batteries
To support the escalating electrical demands of quayside marine charging and depot bus charging without straining regional electricity supplies, Monaco's energy utility, SMEG (Société Monégasque de l'Électricité et du Gaz), has integrated advanced Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and high-efficiency sea-thermal heat pumps.
Energized exclusively by certified renewable solar and hydroelectric power, the integrated microgrid dynamically manages peak power distribution, ensuring reliable electrical supply during peak superyacht berthing seasons such as the Monaco Yacht Show and the Grand Prix.
Exemplifying Monaco’s National Climate Ambition
Monegasque authorities and environmental leaders emphasized that synchronizing port electrification with zero-emission urban transit embodies the Principality’s legally binding climate commitments. Targeting a 55 percent cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and complete carbon neutrality by 2050, Monaco continues to demonstrate that sovereign microstates can serve as visionary laboratories for clean technology and environmental stewardship.
