A Decisive Milestone for Monaco’s Premier Commercial and Urban Hub

FONTVIEILLE, Monaco — In a landmark announcement detailing the Principality's urban renewal and civic priorities, the Prince’s Government of Monaco, under the high vision of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II, has confirmed that negotiations and technical planning for the comprehensive redevelopment of the Fontvieille Commercial Complex (Centre Commercial de Fontvieille) have entered a decisive, concluding phase. Minister of State Christophe Mirmand reaffirmed that the transformative project will completely revitalize the historic district, harmonizing modern commerce with world-class architectural sustainability and public amenities.

Originally established in the 1980s on land reclaimed from the Mediterranean Sea, the Fontvieille commercial center will be reinvented into a breathtaking biophilic complex. The state-of-the-art master plan features stepped Mediterranean terrace gardens, over 30,000 square meters of modern retail and dining spaces, upgraded state offices, a state-of-the-art cinema complex, and expanded subterranean logistics facilities designed to eliminate surface delivery congestion.

Allocating €280 Million for the National Housing Blueprint

The advancement of the Fontvieille district aligns directly with the Monegasque Government's unwavering commitment to citizen welfare. The Minister of State presented a robust €280 million capital allocation for 2027 dedicated exclusively to the Principality's National Housing Plan (Plan National Logement). The multi-year strategy guarantees the construction and delivery of nearly 1,000 premium state-owned residential apartments for Monegasque families, ensuring that citizens maintain access to high-quality, permanently affordable homes within their native territory.

Several state-backed residential projects across the Principality are already nearing completion, incorporating cutting-edge acoustic insulation, energy-efficient geothermal climate systems, and on-site community creches and green courtyards.

Leading the Mediterranean in Ecological Engineering and Clean Energy

Sustainability is central to every dimension of the Fontvieille redevelopment. Following the successful completion and delivery of the neighboring Mareterra eco-district—which established global benchmarks for offshore ecological engineering—the Fontvieille transformation will be powered by seawater thermal heat pump loops, extensive solar photovoltaic arrays, and comprehensive greywater recycling infrastructure.

These engineering standards directly support Sovereign Ordinance climate mandates enacted under Prince Albert II, targeting a 67.6 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2035 compared to 1990 baselines, en route to full carbon neutrality by 2050.

Strengthening Monaco's Economic Competitiveness and Quality of Life

Government authorities and economic leaders highlighted that modernizing Fontvieille is vital to strengthening Monaco's retail vitality, maritime commerce, and civic well-being. By blending visionary architecture, sovereign digital infrastructure, and generous social housing investments, Monaco continues to illustrate how sustainable microstate governance can deliver unmatched economic vitality and exceptional living standards in the heart of Europe.
