Elevating Everyday Commercial Life in Monaco's Thriving Maritime Quarter

FONTVIEILLE, Monaco — In a targeted capital initiative designed to enhance resident convenience, commercial dynamism, and public comfort, the Prince's Government of Monaco, through the State Property Authority (Administration des Domaines), is actively advancing the €4.36 million architectural and technical modernization of the Centre Commercial de Fontvieille (CCF). Situated at the base of the Rock in Monaco's bustling reclaimed maritime district, the shopping complex serves as an indispensable daily social and retail anchor for Monegasque citizens, resident families, and thousands of district workers.

The enhancement program addresses immediate consumer requirements and aesthetic modernization while long-term urban restructuring masterplans for the broader Fontvieille commercial quarter are developed with national stakeholders. The project delivers a brighter, cleaner, and more welcoming atmosphere across all public corridors and retail gallerias.

Modern Architectural Facelift Designed by TAG Architecture

Masterminded by leading Monaco-based architectural studio TAG (The A Group – Jérôme Hein), the renovation delivers a complete aesthetic transformation across the centre’s shared circulation corridors, ground-floor malls, and mezzanine shopping levels. The design replaces dated 1990s finishes with a contemporary, luminous aesthetic characterized by warm natural oak finishes, acoustic column cladding, clean minimalist wall paneling, and streamlined digital wayfinding totems.

A standout feature of the architectural enhancement is the installation of high-efficiency backlit stretched-fabric ceilings (toiles tendues) paired with smart circadian LED illumination. This luminous ceiling system mimics natural daylight, infusing the enclosed mall gallerias with soft, diffused lighting that elevates the overall visitor ambiance while curbing facility electricity consumption by over 30 percent.

Travelator Overhauls and Zero Disruption for Local Merchants

Complementing the aesthetic overhaul, the State Property Authority has finalized the full mechanical replacement of the primary inclined moving walkways (travelators) linking the multi-level underground parking facilities with the main retail hypermarket floor. Outdoor escalators serving the adjacent Espace Léo Ferré forecourt and esplanade walkways have also been comprehensively upgraded to ensure smooth, step-free access for elderly residents and shoppers with prams.

To protect local commerce and maintain patron safety, civil and interior contractors are executing the six-month construction schedule with zero interruptions to normal trading hours. Heavy demolition, ceiling grid alignments, and structural painting are strictly relegated to overnight shifts between 9:00 PM and 7:00 AM, ensuring that anchor tenant Carrefour Monaco and more than 30 boutique retailers operate seamlessly throughout the day.

Bridging Toward Long-Term Urban Transformation in Fontvieille

Government ministers and representatives of the Monaco Union of Retailers and Craftsmen (UCAM) underscored that this multi-million-euro revitalization provides immediate enhancement while broader long-term restructuring frameworks for the entire Fontvieille commercial quarter are calibrated with the National Council.

By reinforcing the vibrancy of neighborhood retail, supporting local merchants, and incorporating sustainable materials, the modernization of Centre Commercial de Fontvieille reaffirms the Principality’s commitment to providing world-class public amenities that harmonize luxury living with everyday community convenience.
