Milestone Advance for Thames River Cross-Rail Extension

LONDON, Greater London — In a major breakthrough for East London regeneration, Transport for London (TfL) and the Mayor of London have concluded comprehensive public consultations and finalized strategic engineering plans for the proposed £1.7 billion Docklands Light Railway (DLR) extension connecting Gallions Reach to Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead. Following widespread public endorsement and budget confirmations, TfL is accelerating technical designs ahead of submitting a formal Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) application in early 2027.

The high-capacity cross-river rail link represents one of London's most vital strategic growth projects, extending automated light rail under the River Thames to provide Thamesmead with its first-ever direct passenger rail connection.

Twin Purpose-Built Stations and Subterranean River Tunnel

Branching southward from the existing DLR network near Gallions Reach, the alignment will serve a newly designed elevated station at Beckton Riverside before descending into an advanced bored tunnel passing beneath the Thames to emerge at a new central interchange station in the heart of Thamesmead.

Both new transit terminals will feature step-free accessibility, high-frequency automated train departures every few minutes, seamless connections to local bus networks, and dedicated active travel cycle links, linking communities on both sides of the river into a unified economic zone.

Unlocking 30,000 High-Quality Sustainable Waterfront Homes

Historically hindered by limited public transit links, the waterfront brownfields of Thamesmead and Beckton Riverside represent London's largest untapped residential opportunity areas. The DLR extension serves as the core infrastructure catalyst enabling the Royal Borough of Greenwich, the London Borough of Newham, and development partners to deliver up to 30,000 new sustainable homes alongside vibrant waterfront parks, primary schools, and commercial town centres.

Commuters boarding at Thamesmead will experience swift, direct journeys to key economic nodes including Canary Wharf, Stratford, and central London via straightforward interchanges with the Elizabeth Line and Jubilee Line.

Driving London's Low-Carbon Urban Masterplan

Municipal planners emphasized that the £1.7 billion rail investment directly supports the Mayor's Transport Strategy target of having 80% of all London journeys made by public transit, cycling, or walking by 2041. By eliminating dependence on private automobiles across growing riverside districts, the extension will prevent roadway congestion, elevate air quality, and provide high-density low-carbon urban living for future generations.
