A Generational Leap for the Austrian Capital's Underground Transit

VIENNA, Vienna — Marking a pivotal civil engineering milestone for Central Europe's mass transit infrastructure, municipal transit operator Wiener Linien and the City of Vienna have completed the primary heavy structural construction of the new subterranean Frankhplatz station. As the flagship northern terminal for the initial phase of the historic U2xU5 subway intersection project, Frankhplatz represents the definitive cornerstone of the U5 line—Vienna’s first-ever fully automated, driverless rapid transit corridor.

The completion of the cavernous station shell follows years of deep tunneling and complex civil excavation beneath one of the Austrian capital's most densely built historic districts, keeping the landmark transit project firmly on track for future revenue service.

Engineering Subterranean Caverns Beneath Vienna's Historic Core

Excavated at depths exceeding 20 meters beneath the bustling streets between the University of Vienna and the Vienna General Hospital (AKH) medical precinct, Frankhplatz required precision geotechnical engineering. Construction crews deployed advanced jet-grouting, diaphragm slurry walls, and low-vibration subterranean mining techniques to safeguard neighboring 19th-century Ringstraße-era heritage architecture.

With heavy reinforced concrete slab casting now complete, structural teams have initiated track slab installations, electrical cabling ducts, and architectural concourse fitouts. The station will feature sweeping natural light shafts, high-capacity express elevators, and step-free tactile pathways engineered for universal accessibility.

Automated Platform Screen Doors and Siemens X-Wagen Trainsets

The U5 line introduces a technological revolution to Vienna’s public transit network through the deployment of full Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) driverless operations. To ensure uncompromised passenger safety, Frankhplatz and all subsequent U5 stations are being equipped with automated full-height platform screen doors (PSDs) that sync electronically with train braking systems, preventing track intrusions and enhancing climate control.

The line will be serviced by the cutting-edge X-Wagen metro fleet, fabricated locally by Siemens Mobility in Vienna-Simmering. Designed with walk-through open gangways, continuous digital passenger information displays, and regenerative braking that recaptures up to 90% of kinetic deceleration energy, the trains provide unparalleled operational reliability and comfort.

Relieving Network Congestion and Expanding Transit Decarbonization

City of Vienna transport councillors and Wiener Linien leadership emphasized that the U2xU5 expansion is the most vital climate protection infrastructure project in Austria. By redistributing commuter flows around the heavily congested Karlsplatz, Stephansplatz, and Rathaus hubs, the new automated U5 line and extended U2 line to Matzleinsdorfer Platz will provide daily transit capacity for up to 300,000 additional passengers.

Powered entirely by certified green electricity, the driverless network will save an estimated 75,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually, securing Vienna’s global reputation as the world's most liveable and environmentally forward-looking city.
