Major Infrastructure Milestone for Western Sydney’s Aerotropolis

SYDNEY, New South Wales — In a monumental achievement for Australian public infrastructure, the New South Wales Government and Sydney Metro have officially completed the installation of all steel trackwork along the transformational 23-kilometre Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport line. Construction crews have laid exactly 106.8 kilometres of heavy steel rail and positioned more than 76,000 concrete sleepers across subterranean tunnels, surface alignments, and elevated skybridge viaducts, connecting the existing suburban rail nexus at St Marys directly to the upcoming Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport and the brand-new Bradfield City Centre.

The completion of tracklaying represents an extraordinary engineering logistical effort that began in Luddenham in early 2025 and advanced systematically across the alignment, keeping the multibillion-dollar transport corridor firmly on track for future passenger operations.

All Six Station Platforms Completed as Architectural Fitouts Intensify

With track infrastructure fully installed, civil delivery partners have achieved another pivotal benchmark: the structural completion of all passenger platforms across the line's six future stations—St Marys, Orchard Hills, Luddenham, Airport Business Park, Airport Terminal, and Bradfield.

Engineering contractors are now rapidly advancing interior mechanical, electrical, and architectural fitouts. High-speed escalators, glass elevators, pressurized tunnel ventilation systems, and full-height glass platform screen doors (PSDs) are actively being assembled across underground and elevated concourses to ensure the highest standards of passenger safety, comfort, and climate isolation.

High-Voltage Energization and Next-Generation Autonomous Rolling Stock

With continuous steel track in place, the project has transitioned into high-voltage traction energization and wayside electrical substation commissioning. The line’s overhead traction electrification and digital communications networks are being energized to support initial dynamic rolling stock testing along the viaducts and tunnels.

The route will be served by an exclusive fleet of custom-designed, fully automated driverless metro trains manufactured by Siemens Mobility. Featuring Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) computer control, high-efficiency regenerative braking, high-speed onboard passenger Wi-Fi, and expansive multi-purpose luggage zones tailored for air travelers, the trains are calibrated to deliver effortless, high-frequency mass transit around the clock.

Anchoring Long-Term Economic Prosperity Across Western Sydney

NSW transport ministers and regional planning executives underscored that the airport metro line represents the fundamental circulatory system for the emerging Western Parkland City. Slicing airport transit times to under 15 minutes from St Marys and facilitating direct transfers to Sydney's central passenger rail grid, the driverless line will support tens of thousands of skilled jobs in advanced aerospace, defense technology, and international logistics, cementing Sydney’s status as a world-leading global metropolis.
