Wiener Linien Achieves Structural Completion of Frankhplatz Station for Vienna U2xU5 Driverless Metro
Landmark Structural Breakthrough in Austria’s Largest Climate Transit Project
VIENNA, Austria — Vienna’s municipal public transit operator Wiener Linien, together with the City of Vienna, has reached a landmark civil engineering milestone in the execution of the multi-billion-euro U2xU5 metro intersection project, completing major subterranean structural and shaft concrete works for the brand-new Frankhplatz station. Situated deep beneath Vienna’s 9th district (Alsergrund), Frankhplatz represents the central northern terminus for the initial operational phase of the U5 line—the Austrian capital’s very first fully automated, driverless subway line.
Civil engineering consortiums operating up to 30 meters below street level executed complex soil stabilization, micro-tunneling, and low-vibration excavation techniques around the historic Votive Church and University of Vienna campuses to safeguard legacy architecture. With heavy civil excavation and reinforced concrete outer shells now complete, specialized mechanical and electrical engineering teams are advancing internal fit-outs, station traction substations, and track-bed installations.
Next-Generation Automated Trains and Platform Screen Doors
The U5 Frankhplatz platforms are being equipped with state-of-the-art full-height glass Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) that synchronize automatically with incoming train doors, preventing track incursions and elevating passenger safety to the highest international standard. The line will be operated by the latest generation of Siemens X-Wagen trainsets, featuring continuous walk-through car designs, air-conditioned passenger cabins, dynamic digital route maps, and advanced regenerative braking grids that return electrical energy directly into Wiener Linien's traction power network.
The driverless system utilizes automated train control (ATO) operating over secure digital communication networks, enabling precise station stops and allowing train frequencies to be flexibly scheduled down to 90-second headways during morning and evening rush hours to comfortably handle peak commuter volumes.
Transforming Regional Mobility and Urban Decarbonization
Parallel structural advancements are progressing rapidly at the multi-level Rathaus interchange complex, where the driverless U5 crosses beneath the redirected U2 line, which is being extended southward through Neubaugasse, Pilgramgasse, and Reinprechtsdorfer Straße to Matzleinsdorfer Platz. The expanded network will significantly untangle central transit bottlenecks and create high-capacity interchanges with suburban S-Bahn commuter rail services.
City of Vienna officials emphasized that the U2xU5 project constitutes the city's single most impactful climate protection infrastructure investment. Upon full multi-phase completion, the expanded transit spine is projected to carry more than 300 million passenger journeys annually, removing tens of thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions from the Viennese atmosphere and supporting Austria’s target of total urban climate neutrality by 2040.
