MTA Worker Dies After Being Hit by Subway Train in the Bronx
A Metropolitan Transportation Authority worker was killed after being struck by a subway train while performing track-related work in the Bronx, authorities said.
The incident occurred Thursday night near the Yankee Stadium area as workers were carrying out construction activity on the subway system. The employee, identified as 41-year-old Moet McCullum, was working as a construction flagger when she was hit by an approaching D train.
McCullum was pronounced dead following the collision. She was reportedly a mother of three.
The fatal incident has raised renewed attention on the safety of subway employees who work close to active train tracks. Construction flaggers play an important role during maintenance projects by communicating with train operators and helping coordinate the movement of trains around work zones.
An investigation is now underway to determine exactly how the collision happened and whether established safety procedures were followed.
The death is particularly significant because it is not the first fatal incident involving a subway flagger in recent years. Another worker was killed by a D train near the 34th Street-Herald Square station in 2023 while working in a similar role.
The latest Bronx incident is expected to prompt further examination of procedures designed to protect workers during overnight and active-track construction.
For New York City commuters, the incident also highlights the risks faced by the workers who maintain the city's extensive subway network, often working during periods when trains continue to operate.
Authorities are expected to review the circumstances surrounding the collision as the investigation continues.
