Seattle Balk Call Sparks Cubs Protest in Extra-Inning Loss to Mariners
Matthew Boyd says disputed Seattle balk was a familiar pickoff move
SEATTLE, Washington — A disputed balk call against Chicago Cubs starter Matthew Boyd in the fifth inning Friday night became a pivotal flashpoint in the Cubs’ extra-inning loss to the Seattle Mariners, prompting manager Craig Counsell to argue with home-plate umpire Brennan Miller and receive an ejection.
The call came as the Cubs attempted to recover from an early deficit at Seattle. Boyd, known as one of Major League Baseball’s most effective pitchers at picking runners off base, tried to pick off the leadoff runner after Nico Hoerner’s throwing error put him aboard. Miller ruled the move a balk, sending the runner to second base.
That runner advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a shallow bloop single to center field, adding a run that Boyd said mattered in a tightly contested game. Chicago ultimately lost in extra innings.
“Any run can make a difference in a game,” Boyd said afterward. “Obviously, I would have loved to be better, would have loved to get a strikeout after [the balk]. The ground ball was after that, then the flare dropped in. It’s unfortunate.”
Counsell says umpire was fooled by Boyd’s pickoff move
Counsell forcefully disputed the ruling, arguing that Boyd’s move was legal and familiar to opposing clubs and umpires. The Cubs manager said the decision came after Miller mistook a pickoff attempt for a delivery toward home plate.
“It’s not a balk,” Counsell said. “He hasn’t been called for a balk in seven years.” Counsell added that he believed the umpire “got fooled and made up a call because he got fooled.”
Boyd offered a similar explanation, saying Miller appeared to believe he had begun his motion to the plate. “That’s the same move I’ve done,” Boyd said. “That’s the first time that move has been called a balk since 2019, when Joe West called it from third base.”
The call drew particular attention because Boyd has built a recent reputation as an elite pickoff pitcher. He picked off 11 runners last season, the most in the majors and a new single-season Cubs franchise record. Boyd has four pickoffs this season despite missing significant time because of injuries, leaving him two behind the major-league lead.
Pickoff moves and balk rulings can have an outsized impact in close games because they change the scoring position of a runner without requiring a ball to be put in play. The rule is intended to prevent pitchers from deceiving runners unfairly, but close judgments often depend on an umpire’s interpretation of a pitcher’s movement.
Boyd cites Cal Raleigh homer as bigger Seattle mistake
While the balk extended Seattle’s advantage, Boyd said his own second inning was the more damaging stretch of the outing. Chicago scored three runs in the first inning, but Boyd surrendered four runs in the second, including a three-run home run by Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh.
“It’s more the Cal homer,” Boyd said. “The other ones are going to happen, the soft contact. The Cal homer, I could have done something better with. That’s a three-run mistake.”
The Seattle outing continued a difficult recent stretch for Boyd following a strong run after his return from the injured list in late June. He allowed four earned runs and a season-high nine hits against the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this month, then gave up seven runs and four home runs against the St. Louis Cardinals last weekend.
Boyd has allowed eight homers across his past four starts while posting a 6.12 ERA during that span. The Cubs’ loss in Seattle is final, while the disputed balk call stood and no further ruling on Counsell’s ejection was announced.
