A police officer in Akron, Ohio has been terminated after the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Jazmir Tucker, city officials announced on Friday. The decision follows a substantial settlement agreement of $4.75 million reached between the city and Tucker's family, pending judicial approval.

The tragic incident occurred in November 2024, when police reported that Tucker had been carrying a loaded gun. Officers responded to gunfire, pursued Tucker, and one officer fired multiple rounds during the encounter.

Policy Violations Cited in Officer's Termination

Akron Mayor Shammas Malik stated that Officer Davon Fields faced termination due to several policy violations, which included a failure to provide necessary medical assistance and breaches of the department's body camera policies. Malik additionally referenced unresolved criminal allegations pertaining to Fields.

“The loss of life and the circumstances in this case were absolutely tragic, with enormous human and financial costs,” Mayor Malik commented. “We have a responsibility to make policy changes that reduce the likelihood of cases like this happening in the future.”

Union's Response and Background

The local Fraternal Order of Police, represented by president Brian Lucey, expressed strong opposition to the firing, labeling it an unjust decision and claiming Fields is being used as a “political scapegoat.” The union has announced plans to contest the termination.

A grand jury had already decided nearly a year ago not to indict Fields in connection with the shooting, a fact that raises further questions about the decision to terminate him now.

Critical Questions from Bodycam Footage

In the aftermath of the incident, Mayor Malik remarked on concerns raised by body camera footage of the shooting. He noted that officers failed to activate their cameras promptly and that significant time elapsed before first aid was rendered to Tucker.

The footage reportedly showed the shooting officer obscured by his firearm, making it difficult to see Tucker right before he was shot. Another officer was recorded removing a handgun from Tucker's jacket pocket after the shooting.
