Rudolph Arthur Marcus, a Nobel Prize-winning chemist and longtime professor at the California Institute of Technology, died peacefully at his home on Thursday at the age of 102. His family confirmed the news, stating that he was working on three separate research papers at the time of his death.

Born on July 21, 1923, in Montreal, Canada, Marcus made significant contributions to the field of chemistry, particularly known for the Marcus Theory, which explains electron transfer reactions. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1992 for his groundbreaking work. Caltech President Ray Jayawardhana praised Marcus as a visionary scientist whose career exemplified the beauty of fundamental science. He is survived by his three sons, four grandchildren, one great-grandson, and his long-term companion, Maria-Elizabeth Michel-Beyerle.
