Residents in Washington, D.C., faced significant air quality issues on Sunday, prompting officials to issue a "purple" air quality alert due to pollution levels classified as "very unhealthy." The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments attributed the decline in air quality to the extensive fireworks displays held on July 4th. Warnings were issued advising sensitive groups, including individuals with heart or lung diseases, older adults, and children, to avoid outdoor activities.

By Monday, air quality began to improve and was expected to return to normal throughout the week. Suburban areas received an "orange" alert, indicating unhealthy conditions for sensitive groups, while parts of Maryland were classified with a "yellow" alert, denoting moderate pollution levels. On Sunday, Washington, D.C., was ranked as the sixth most polluted city globally, trailing behind Lahore and Kinshasa, according to IQAir.
