Cisco to Lay Off 471 Employees Across Bay Area Offices

Cisco Systems, Inc. plans to lay off 471 employees in California, affecting its offices in San José, Milpitas, and San Francisco. The layoffs were confirmed through notices filed with the California Employment Development Department this week.

The company, which specializes in networking devices and services, had previously announced in May that it would reduce its workforce by fewer than 4,000 positions, representing less than 5% of its total employees. The affected roles include positions in software engineering, product management, design, and business operations.

While Cisco has cited a focus on artificial intelligence investments as a reason for the layoffs, it has not provided additional details beyond its earlier restructuring announcement. The company reported a record revenue of $15.8 billion in the third quarter of this year, with a net income increase of 35% year-over-year.

As of July 2025, Cisco employed approximately 86,200 individuals. The layoffs come amid a broader trend in the tech industry, where companies have announced significant job cuts, with AI being a leading factor in these decisions.
