16-Year-Old Fatally Shot by Santa Ana Police After Reported Domestic Stabbing

A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed by Santa Ana police officers on Sunday night following a domestic disturbance call, authorities said. The incident occurred in the 3400 block of South Main Street at approximately 10:30 p.m.

According to a news release from the Santa Ana Police Department, a man called emergency dispatchers to report that his girlfriend's son was under the influence, destroying property, and had stabbed him. When officers arrived at the residence, they encountered the teenager, who was armed with a knife. Officers shot the teen, who died at the scene. No police officers were injured during the incident.

Santa Ana police spokesperson Natalie Garcia said that arriving officers prioritized de-escalation. "Our officers did the best they could to de-escalate that situation ... from occurring into something fatal," Garcia told reporters at the scene. The shooting is under investigation by the Santa Ana Police Department’s Homicide Unit, the Internal Affairs Division, and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
