FBI Confiscates Drones Near Atlanta World Cup Venues, Warns of Heavy Fines for Flight Violations
Federal authorities seized three drones in metro Atlanta on Thursday after operators allegedly violated temporary flight restrictions established for FIFA World Cup-related events. The FBI's Atlanta field office, working alongside local law enforcement and federal partners, announced the seizures as part of ongoing security measures surrounding the international tournament's events.
Officials did not immediately disclose the specific locations where the drones were operating or confirm if any arrests have been made. However, the FBI warned that unauthorized drone flights near World Cup venues and related activities carry severe penalties. Operators who violate the temporary flight restrictions could face fines of up to $100,000, have their equipment confiscated, and potentially face criminal charges.
Federal authorities emphasized that the improper or unsafe use of unmanned aircraft systems poses significant risks to manned aircraft, law enforcement operations, and spectators on the ground. To prevent violations, officials are urging drone operators to check for active flight restrictions using the Federal Aviation Administration's approved B4UFLY service providers before launching any aircraft.
The FBI is also asking the public to assist in maintaining airspace safety by reporting any suspicious or unsafe drone activity. Reports can be made by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI or by submitting a tip online through the agency's official portal.
