Mike Tomlin Set to Join NBC's "Sunday Night Football" as Pregame Analyst

Mike Tomlin, the longtime former head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, is expected to become a pregame analyst for NBC's "Sunday Night Football," according to multiple people familiar with the move. The decision comes as NBC revamps its "Football Night in America" studio lineup ahead of the upcoming NFL season. Although the network has not made an official announcement, reports surfaced on Tuesday regarding Tomlin's new role.

Tomlin, 54, stepped down in January after 19 seasons with the Steelers, where he secured 193 regular-season wins—matching franchise legend Chuck Noll—and led the team to a Super Bowl victory in 2008. Despite early postseason triumphs, Pittsburgh struggled in recent playoff appearances, including a record-setting home loss against the Houston Texans in last season's wild-card round.

Tomlin's appointment follows the confirmed departure of Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy, who had spent 17 years on the NBC pregame show. The current hosting lineup is expected to include Maria Taylor and former Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, with the network expressing interest in re-signing analyst Devin McCourty. Other team members, such as Mike Florio and Matthew Berry, are also anticipated to remain, while the status of Jac Collinsworth, Rodney Harrison, and Chris Simms is still uncertain.

NBC is reportedly considering moving its entire studio production on-site to stadiums for game-day coverage, shifting from its usual base in Stamford, Connecticut. The on-air team’s composition and format are part of ongoing changes driven by network leadership.

It is not yet clear if Tomlin's broadcasting role will extend beyond a single season. Although he signed a contract extension with the Steelers in 2024 that includes a club option for 2027, his future in coaching remains a topic of industry speculation. The Steelers retain contractual control, which could allow them to seek compensation if he returns to coaching elsewhere before the agreement expires.
