American-Born Israeli Soldier Killed in Combat in Southern Lebanon
An American-born Israeli soldier was killed in combat in southern Lebanon, Israeli officials confirmed on Sunday. Sgt. Moshe Yitzchak Hacohen Katz, 22, was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and had served in the Israel Defense Forces' 890th Battalion of the Paratroopers Brigade, according to a statement from the military.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that Katz was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant. Details surrounding the circumstances of his death were not disclosed, but officials stated that the incident occurred during fighting in southern Lebanon, an area that has seen ongoing clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered condolences to Katz's family, saying, "On behalf of all citizens of Israel, we embrace the family of the late Moshe in their difficult time and wish a speedy and complete recovery to our soldiers who were injured in that incident."
Katz's great-uncle, Rabbi Yehoshua Hecht, told Israel's Army Radio that Katz was "a very special young man" and described him as religious and an excellent student, according to the Associated Press.
Katz is one of at least five Israeli soldiers who have died in operations in Lebanon since March, the Associated Press reported. The conflict in southern Lebanon has contributed to a worsening humanitarian crisis, with the United Nations estimating that one in five Lebanese residents—around a million people—have been displaced. Israeli military operations have led to widespread civilian evacuations across the region.
As of the latest reports, the IDF has not provided further information about the incident, and fighting along the Israel-Lebanon border continues.
