Colston Loveland Expected to Lead Bears’ Passing Game After Standout Rookie Year

Chicago, Illinois, United States of america — Tight end Colston Loveland is set to take on a central role in the Chicago Bears offense for the upcoming NFL season, as the team looks to fill the void left by the departure of wide receiver DJ Moore. The shift comes after Loveland made an immediate impact during his rookie campaign, leading the team in key receiving categories despite initial surprise over his high draft selection last year.

Selected 10th overall in last season’s draft, Loveland became one of only seven tight ends this century chosen in the top 10 picks. His selection drew attention not just because Penn State’s Tyler Warren was widely ranked ahead of him, but also since the Bears had recently committed to veteran tight end Cole Kmet. Nonetheless, Loveland quickly demonstrated his value by recording 58 receptions for 713 yards and six touchdowns, all team bests among tight ends. He averaged nearly 60 receiving yards across the final 10 games, suggesting growing trust within the offense.

The Bears, under head coach Ben Johnson’s leadership, have refocused their passing game strategy following Moore’s trade. In addition to Loveland, receivers Rome Odunze and Luther Burden are expected to be significant contributors. However, Johnson, who strongly advocated for drafting Loveland, appears to be counting on the 6-foot-5 tight end to become a dynamic focal point in his system.

Loveland credited Johnson’s demanding approach for accelerating his development, describing the coach as direct but motivating. "He took a chance on me and asked me to do a lot of things," Loveland said earlier this year.

As training camp approaches, Loveland is positioned to play a critical role in reshaping the Bears’ offense amid broader roster changes. The team’s current efforts remain focused on preparing for the new season, with Loveland set to anchor an evolving passing attack.
