Tornado Strikes Lena, Illinois, Damages Homes and Schools but Spares Community from Serious Injuries
A tornado touched down in Lena, Illinois on Friday afternoon, causing widespread damage but resulting in no reported fatalities or serious injuries, according to local authorities. The town, located roughly 48 miles west of Rockford and about 120 miles from Chicago, was in the path of a powerful storm system that prompted emergency warnings and urgent safety advisories.
The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Lena at 4:45 p.m. CT. Soon after, large, rotating clouds were seen descending on the area, and reports of extensive storm damage followed. Downed trees and power lines left town roads impassable. Officials asked the public to stay away from Lena, citing hazardous conditions and the need for clear access for emergency crews.
"There is no way to get into town due to trees and wires down," Stephenson County Sheriff Steve Stovall said, emphasizing the focus on resident safety and recovery efforts. By early evening, the town was officially closed to inbound and outbound traffic as emergency responders dealt with storm impacts and braced for additional severe weather moving into the area.
Throughout the afternoon, residents described moments of fear as tornado sirens sounded and power was lost. Some reported taking shelter in basements as the storm passed over. While there were no injuries, several homes and buildings, including Lena High School and an elementary school with students present, sustained exterior damage. School officials are still assessing the extent of the damage, but confirmed all students remained safe during the event.
Governor JB Pritzker confirmed that the Illinois Emergency Management Agency had been deployed to coordinate support with local officials. As clean-up efforts began, community members and emergency workers joined forces to remove debris and assist neighbors. Residents were urged to remain vigilant as further storms were forecast into the night.
Local emergency services continue to patrol the area, and recovery operations are ongoing as Lena works to restore safety and repair damage caused by the tornado.
