Severe Storms Bring Fatal Lightning Strike, Flooding, and Tornadoes Across Midwest and Great Lakes

Heavy storms swept through the central United States this week, leaving behind significant damage, widespread flooding, and at least one death after a man was fatally struck by lightning in Waukesha, Wisconsin on Wednesday night, local police reported.

The ongoing weather system, fueled by moist air and a powerful jet stream, has spanned states from central Texas to the Great Lakes region. According to the National Weather Service, over 1,100 reports of severe weather—including tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds exceeding 60 mph—were received between Monday and Wednesday.

Officials in Wisconsin have confirmed five tornadoes in southern and central regions, with teams continuing to survey storm damage for additional tornado counts. The National Weather Service has issued numerous flood warnings and watches across multiple states as storms, accompanied by intense rainfall and frequent lightning, have persisted throughout the week and are forecast to continue into the weekend.

Communities in Michigan have been particularly impacted. In Cheboygan, emergency crews pumped water from a dam and removed floodgates to manage pressure amid flood threats, urging residents and businesses to prepare emergency supplies and stay alert. In the small village of Bellaire, overwhelmed wastewater systems forced the partial release of treated waste and prompted requests for residents to conserve water.

Flooding along the Muskegon River in western Michigan reached critical levels, prompting evacuation orders for those living below the Croton Dam in Newaygo County. In Portage, Wisconsin, the Wisconsin River approached a historic flood stage, leading to widespread road closures and concerns about the integrity of local levees.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers declared a state of emergency earlier in the week in response to the flooding. In Milwaukee, cars became stranded on highways submerged in floodwaters, prompting warnings from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office against travel in hazardous conditions.

Meteorologists warned that another severe storm is expected Friday evening before conditions improve in Wisconsin. The broader storm system is likely to linger over parts of the Midwest and Great Lakes through the weekend, with particular concern for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in regions stretching from northern Oklahoma into Wisconsin and eastern Illinois, according to the National Weather Service.

Authorities continue to monitor river levels, assess storm damage, and urge residents in affected areas to follow official advisories as the severe weather persists.
