Tanner Murray Makes Major League Debut for White Sox After Pereira Injury
Tanner Murray, a 26-year-old infielder, made his major league debut with the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, stepping into the starting shortstop role at Guaranteed Rate Field. The move came after outfielder Everson Pereira was placed on the 10-day injured list following a left ankle sprain sustained Wednesday in Miami, team officials confirmed.
Murray, who had been playing for Triple-A Charlotte, received the call-up early Saturday after a rapid roster shift. Having excelled during his brief time at Charlotte—posting a .304 batting average with two home runs and seven RBIs over six games—Murray brought both versatility and defensive strength to the team. In his debut, he batted seventh and immediately made his mark defensively, handling a leadoff grounder from George Springer cleanly in the opening inning.
Later in the game, Murray drew attention with a standout play in the third inning, halting a Toronto Blue Jays rally by snagging a bases-loaded grounder from Addison Barger and executing a spinning throw to first. Despite going hitless in two at-bats, his defensive skills were quickly acknowledged by bench coach Will Venable, who stated, "We know he is a plus defender out there. That’s one of the reasons he is here. Great day for Tanner."
Murray, a former U.C. Davis walk-on, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and described an emotional phone call with his family upon learning of his promotion. "If they need me to play left field, I can do that, too," Murray told reporters, emphasizing his readiness to contribute in any capacity.
Team personnel indicated that Pereira’s injury has not responded well to treatment, prompting the roster adjustment. The White Sox continue their homestand with Murray expected to remain available while Pereira recovers on the injured list.
