Nine Hospitalized, Including Infant, After Simcoe Street Apartment Fire in London
Nine people, including an infant, were hospitalized after a fire swept through a high-rise residential building at 241 Simcoe Street in London, Ontario, early Saturday morning, according to first responders.
The London Fire Department reported that the blaze began on the building’s sixth floor at approximately 6:30 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire and smoke conditions, necessitating multiple rescues from the affected apartments. Emergency crews transported four individuals, including the infant, to hospital in stable condition while five others were listed in critical condition, paramedics confirmed.
Firefighters coordinated with building management to implement a fire watch to ensure the safety of residents in the wake of the incident. Later the same morning, a separate fire was reported on a second floor balcony of the same building. Firefighters stated that this second incident was unrelated to the first and was subsequently brought under control.
As a precaution, the City of London activated emergency management measures. A reception centre was established for residents displaced by the fire, and several city buses provided temporary shelter to evacuees, according to city officials and police.
The London Fire Department remains at the scene, investigating the origins of the initial blaze. Officials have also requested investigative support from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office. Police stated that, following emergency operations, occupants have now been permitted to re-enter the building.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenges of fire safety in high-rise residential complexes, drawing attention to the rapid response of emergency services and the importance of evacuation protocols. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
