Ukrainian Orthodox Community in Toronto Celebrates Easter with Traditional Basket Blessings
Ukrainian and other Orthodox Christian communities in Toronto are marking Easter this weekend, a week after most Canadians celebrated the holiday, by gathering for traditional rituals rooted in their faith and cultural heritage.
Unlike Western Christian denominations, Orthodox Christians follow the Julian calendar, which places their observance of Easter a week later. In Toronto, families within the Ukrainian community have spent days preparing for the holiday, including decorating pysanky—eggs intricately dyed using wax and colored patterns passed down through generations. The festivities also include hayilky, spring circle dances performed outdoors after Easter to welcome the warmer season.
A central element of the celebration is the basket blessing ceremony, known as sviachennia. Families prepare baskets filled with symbolic foods such as Easter bread, eggs, butter, and kielbasa, and bring them to church to be blessed by priests, signifying the end of the Lenten fast. At Christ the Good Shepherd St. Michael's Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Toronto, parishioners gathered on April 4 for this ceremony, as documented by local reports and community members.
Father Andrij Figol, a priest at the church, described the transition from fasting to feasting as a moment of communal joy. “We go from fast to feast,” he said, noting that the blessed baskets are intended to carry the light and joy of Easter back to families' homes.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine four years ago, over 300,000 Ukrainians have settled in Canada. For many newcomers attending ceremonies at churches such as Christ the Good Shepherd and St. Demetrius the Great Martyr Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, these rituals hold personal significance beyond religious observance, helping them maintain a connection to their homeland while forging new traditions in Canada.
Basket blessings began on Holy Saturday, with families waiting to break their fast until after Easter Sunday services. Ceremonies this weekend are expected to continue at Ukrainian Orthodox churches throughout Toronto, running from morning to evening.
As of this weekend, celebrations across the city are ongoing, highlighting both the endurance of tradition and the strength of community among Orthodox Christian Canadians.
