Met Police Launches Review After Bag of Firearms Left Outside Sadiq Khan's Home
A bag containing several police-issued firearms and ammunition was discovered unattended outside the south London residence of Mayor Sadiq Khan on Tuesday evening, prompting an urgent review by the Metropolitan Police.
The incident reportedly unfolded when a member of the public found the bag by the kerbside near Khan's home. Jordan Griffiths, whose girlfriend discovered the bag, told media that the contents included an MP5 semi-automatic Heckler & Koch carbine, a Glock pistol, a Taser, and various rounds of ammunition. Griffiths described being shocked by the discovery and photographed the items before notifying police.
According to an official police statement, officers received a call about the find at approximately 9:40pm and arrived at the scene within seven minutes to secure and collect the firearms. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the items had been issued to officers and that a preliminary assessment suggests the bag was misplaced by on-duty armed police officers assigned to protect the mayor.
The force acknowledged public concern over the incident and stated that the Directorate of Professional Standards is leading an urgent internal review. Five officers have been removed from frontline duties in connection with the ongoing investigation.
A spokesperson for Mayor Khan characterized the incident as “very serious” and called for comprehensive action from police leadership to prevent similar lapses in protocol in the future.
The investigation remains active as the Metropolitan Police assesses the circumstances that led to the security breach. No injuries were reported, and all recovered firearms and ammunition have been accounted for.
