Texas Killing Fields: Man Charged in 1986 Deaths Near Houston

Authorities in Galveston County have charged a 61-year-old man in connection with two deaths linked to the notorious "Texas Killing Fields," a stretch of land near Houston where more than 30 women's bodies were discovered over several decades. Prosecutors announced Wednesday that James Dolphs Elmore Jr. was indicted by a Galveston grand jury in the deaths of 16-year-old Laura Miller and 30-year-old Audrey Cook, whose remains were found in 1986.

The "Texas Killing Fields," located along Interstate 45 southeast of Houston, became an infamous symbol of unsolved murders of girls and young women since the 1970s. Law enforcement has long suspected multiple perpetrators in these killings. Miller and Cook were among four young women whose bodies were located between 1984 and 1991 on a rural tract in League City, about 28 miles southeast of Houston. The other two victims were identified as Heidi Fye-Villareal and Donna Prudhomme.

Galveston County District Attorney Kenneth Cusick said Elmore was arrested Tuesday and is being held without bond at the Galveston County Jail. Elmore faces charges of manslaughter and felony tampering with evidence in Miller's death, and felony tampering with evidence in Cook's case. No attorney has been listed for Elmore, according to court and jail records.

Prosecutors also presented evidence to a grand jury regarding Clyde Hedrick, a longtime friend of Elmore who authorities allege was responsible for the women's deaths. However, Hedrick died by suicide last month before the grand jury returned a decision. Hedrick had previously been convicted of manslaughter in the 1985 death of Ellen Beason.

Relatives of the victims expressed relief at Elmore's indictment but criticized the length of time taken to advance the cases. District Attorney Cusick emphasized continued efforts to pursue remaining leads and seek justice for additional victims. Most of the deaths associated with the "Texas Killing Fields" remain unresolved, and the investigation is ongoing.
