Man Arrested Over Alleged Racist Abuse at Tyne-Wear Derby
Police have arrested a 45-year-old Gateshead man in connection with alleged racist abuse during last month's Tyne-Wear derby at St James’s Park in Newcastle, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
Northumbria Police reported the man was detained on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence after a complaint arose from the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Sunderland, played on March 22. According to Detective Inspector Phil Guard, robust bail conditions have been set as the investigation proceeds.
The alleged abuse led Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida to report the incident to match officials early in the second half. The referee, Anthony Taylor, paused play and conferred with managers and club officials following the report, which Sunderland praised as an example of bravery and leadership from Geertruida. Newcastle United said in a statement they were aware of a racism report made by a visiting player regarding someone in the crowd.
The Tyne-Wear derby, known for intense local rivalry, ended in a 2-1 victory for Sunderland, who had previously defeated Newcastle earlier in the season. The incident highlights ongoing efforts by authorities and clubs to tackle discrimination in football stadiums.
Northumbria Police continue to work closely with both clubs and supporter groups as the investigation into the incident remains active.
