Marist Secures State Title as Private Schools Dominate Illinois High School Basketball in 2025-26
Marist High School clinched the state championship in Illinois' largest basketball class, capping the 2025-26 season with a dominant postseason run. The RedHawks, after placing third in the East Suburban Catholic Conference, powered through seven playoff victories with an average win margin of 20 points, only once playing a game closer than 12 points.
Standout individual accolades highlighted the season's biggest performers. Jaxson Davis of Warren High School was recognized for a stellar campaign, averaging 25 points, six rebounds, and five assists per game. Meanwhile, Amarion Smith-Holley, a sophomore point guard for Peoria Richwoods, earned praise for carrying his team through crucial postseason contests, including a 31-point outburst in a regional final and decisive plays in consecutive sectional games.
York High School emerged as the season’s most surprising story. Coached by Mike Dunn, the Dukes exceeded expectations by reaching the top four in Class 4A, overcoming doubters from preseason through their deep playoff run.
The season also underscored a growing trend: the increasing influence of private schools in Illinois high school basketball. Three of the final four teams in Class 4A were private institutions, and the championship game—where Marist defeated Benet—marked the first time the state’s largest class final was an all-private school matchup.
Other standout performers included senior Charles Barnes of Marist, junior Mason Martin of Neuqua Valley, and sophomore Amir Tucker of St. Ignatius, each recognized for significant individual development and contributions to their teams.
As the season concludes, private schools’ prominence marks a significant shift in the competitive balance of Illinois basketball. No major injuries or controversies were reported, and the year closed with player achievements and team performances widely acknowledged across the state.
