A man was taken into custody by Chicago police early Monday after authorities received several reports of a sexual assault near a Loop parking garage. The incident occurred at approximately 6:35 a.m. in the first block of North Michigan Avenue, according to police statements.
Police said a 20-year-old woman was walking along North Michigan Avenue when a man approached and sexually assaulted her near the garage. Witnesses at the scene intervened during the attack, prompting the suspect to flee the area. Officers apprehended the man a short time later, police confirmed.
The victim was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment following the incident. The condition of the woman was not immediately released by authorities.
Officials with Millennium Garages, located near the site of the reported assault, stated they would provide additional information at a later time. Meanwhile, officials from the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications reported receiving several 911 calls alerting them to the criminal sexual assault, based on police scanner audio.
Community members who use the parking garage regularly expressed concerns for safety but noted that violent behavior in the area is uncommon. Some emphasized the importance of remaining cautious, especially during early or late hours.
