On March 23, 2026, a Chicago scooter crash in the South Shore neighborhood left a 15-year-old girl dead and a 13-year-old injured after a vehicle struck their electric scooter late Saturday, police said. A Good Samaritan flagged down officers shortly after the collision, which occurred near the 2800 block of East 77th Street at about 8:30 p.m.

The dead teenager was identified by investigators as Violet Harris, 15. Emergency crews found Harris unresponsive with severe head and chest trauma and transported her to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where the Cook County medical examiner’s office recorded her death at 8:56 p.m. The scooter’s 13-year-old operator sustained lacerations, walked to Jackson Park Hospital after the crash and was later transferred to the University of Chicago Medical Center. Surveillance video reportedly captured the impact and shows the striking vehicle continuing southbound on South Exchange Avenue.

No arrests have been announced and detectives remain actively investigating the hit-and-run. An autopsy has been scheduled by the medical examiner, and investigators are reviewing available video evidence as they seek additional information about the vehicle and its driver.
