Logan Square Man Convicted of Murdering Girlfriend Whose Dismembered Body Was Found in Duffel Bag

A Logan Square man, Genesis Silva, 36, was found guilty by a jury on Thursday of first-degree murder in connection with the June 2023 fatal stabbing of his girlfriend, Brittany Battaglia, 33, whose dismembered remains were discovered hidden inside his apartment.

Battaglia's body, described by prosecutors as nearly decapitated, was found concealed inside a large duffel bag in Silva's bedroom in the 2000 block of North Kimball Avenue. According to prosecutors, Battaglia had told her roommate she was heading to Silva's home — where the two had been in a relationship for over a year — the same evening she was expected at a social gathering she never attended. Her family reported her missing after they were unable to contact her.

Detectives investigating her disappearance conducted a traffic stop on Silva and accompanied him back to his residence, where they located the duffel bag. Silva was placed in custody after investigators observed him attempting to re-enter the apartment through a rear stairway. A machete was recovered from his backpack, and a second machete was found in his vehicle. Authorities also seized two cell phones, two pocketknives, and an ice pick from his possession. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office ruled Battaglia's death a homicide caused by multiple incised wounds.

Silva was initially charged only with concealment of a homicidal death before a first-degree murder charge was added approximately six months later. A post-trial motion hearing is scheduled for April 9, while a sentencing date has yet to be set.
