Missing 72-Year-Old Jacksonville Navy Veteran Found Dead in Georgia

Veteran Located After Multi-State Search

A 72-year-old Navy veteran from Jacksonville, identified as Margaret Hanley, who was reported missing more than a week earlier, has been found dead in Georgia, according to deputies.

The Liberty County Sheriff's Office in Georgia reported that Hanley’s vehicle was discovered stuck in the mud on Old Hines Road. Deputies stated that her body was found adjacent to the vehicle.

Discovery of Vehicle and Body

According to the Liberty County Sheriff's Office, the vehicle associated with Hanley was located on Old Hines Road in Georgia. The vehicle, identified by the family as a 2001 silver Toyota RAV4, was found stuck in the mud. Deputies said that Hanley’s body was discovered next to this vehicle.

Liberty County deputies stated that Hanley’s car was secured at the scene and will be impounded as part of the ongoing handling of the case.

Family’s Concern and Missing Person Report

Before Hanley was found, her family had reported her missing after they were unable to reach her. Her son, Jomo Thompson, filed a missing persons report and expressed concern over her unexplained absence.

Thompson stated that, after filing the report, he reviewed his mother’s bank account and saw that she had been sending large amounts of money to someone. He described these transactions as unusual and concerning. Thompson also said that, according to the family, Hanley had short-term memory loss.

Vehicle Movements Prior to Discovery

The family reported that Hanley’s 2001 silver Toyota RAV4 had been electronically pinged in several locations before it was ultimately found in Georgia. According to the family, the vehicle was pinged in Gainesville and Starke, and most recently in Hinesville, where it was later discovered by authorities in Liberty County.

Authorities have confirmed the recovery of Hanley’s body and the impoundment of her vehicle. No additional official details about the circumstances of her death were provided in the available information.
