Three Junior Hockey Players Killed in Alberta Crash

Three Southern Alberta Mustangs junior hockey players were killed on Monday morning in a vehicle crash at an intersection with Highway 2 in Stavely, Alberta, while they were heading to practice.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the collision occurred at an intersection involving Highway 2 in the community of Stavely, which is located about an hour’s drive south of Calgary. The crash involved a northbound semi truck pulling gravel and a small passenger vehicle travelling east.

Victims Identified by Authorities

RCMP identified the three players who died as JJ Wright and Cameron Casorso, both 18 years old and from Kamloops, British Columbia, and 17-year-old Caden Fine of Birmingham, Alabama. All three were members of the Southern Alberta Mustangs junior hockey team.

The driver of the semi truck, a 40-year-old man from Stavely, sustained minor injuries in the collision, according to RCMP.

Team and Community Respond to Loss

The U.S. Premier Hockey League team associated with the Southern Alberta Mustangs stated on Facebook that it is working closely with authorities following the crash and requested privacy for the families of the players. The team described its members as part of a family and noted that the organization is grieving.

At the town arena in Stavely, three white and red jerseys bearing the last names of the deceased players were placed on a table, accompanied by three upright hockey sticks in a visible tribute to the victims.

Statements from Officials and Hockey Organizations

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith issued a message of condolence on social media to the families of the players and their teammates. She stated that the wider Alberta hockey community is sharing in the sorrow of those affected.

The Kamloops Minor Hockey Association said in a statement that Cameron Casorso and JJ Wright grew up playing in its organization. The association reported that Casorso played in Kamloops from 2012 to 2025 and Wright from 2011 to 2025.

The National Hockey League’s Calgary Flames also posted a message on social media offering support and stating that their thoughts and prayers are with everyone who knew the three players.

Condolences from Humboldt Mayor

The mayor of Humboldt, Saskatchewan, Rob Muench, offered condolences to the Alberta team in a Facebook post. He stated that the community of Humboldt stands with the affected community in Alberta as it mourns the loss of the three players and that their thoughts are with all those impacted by the crash.
