Teen Killed in Afternoon Crash on Washington Street

A teenager was killed and an elderly woman was injured in a car crash on Monday afternoon in Grayslake, Illinois. The collision occurred around 2:15 p.m. on Washington Street in the far north suburban community.

According to police, a black Volkswagen was traveling east on Washington Street when it struck a Toyota SUV that was heading west on the same road. The Toyota SUV was attempting to turn south onto Atkinson Road at the time of the impact.

Sequence of Collision and Vehicle Damage

After the initial collision between the black Volkswagen and the Toyota SUV, the Volkswagen continued forward and collided with a traffic light pole. The incident resulted in significant damage to the vehicles involved and the traffic control equipment at the intersection.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported both drivers to nearby hospitals. The 19-year-old man who was driving the Volkswagen was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at the medical center following the crash.

Injuries to Elderly Driver and Ongoing Investigation

The 86-year-old woman who was driving the Toyota SUV was also taken to a hospital from the crash site. Authorities reported that she sustained non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision.

Police stated that the cause of the crash was under investigation on Monday evening. No additional details regarding contributing factors or potential charges were released at that time. Officials have not provided further information about the condition of the traffic light pole or any roadway closures related to the investigation.

The crash on Washington Street in Grayslake involved only the two vehicles described by police, and the confirmed outcome was one fatality and one person injured with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities continued their work Monday evening to determine the circumstances that led to the collision at the intersection with Atkinson Road.
