An Aurora man has been sentenced to 38 years in prison following his guilty plea in the fatal stabbing of his mother in 2022, according to the Kane County State's Attorney's Office.
Details of the Crime
Prosecutors stated that on July 14, 2022, Abel Quinones-Herstad, then 23, stabbed his mother, 55-year-old Edith Gonzalez-Alarcon, multiple times with a knife at her home on the 00-99 block of Jackson Place in Aurora, Illinois. Authorities said he acted without lawful justification and with intent to kill. An autopsy indicated that Gonzalez-Alarcon sustained 26 stab wounds and died as a result.
Events Following the Stabbing
After the stabbing, officials said Quinones-Herstad traveled to his brother's home in Wisconsin. There, he stated that he had done something bad to their mother and could not return. The Aurora Police Department was then contacted and asked to perform a welfare check at Gonzalez-Alarcon's residence in Aurora.
Discovery of the Victim and Evidence
The day after the welfare check request, Aurora police officers went to Gonzalez-Alarcon's home on Jackson Place. Inside the residence, officers found her body in a closet. Investigators recovered a knife from beneath a rug in the living room of the home.
Arrest and Custody
Law enforcement officers in Wisconsin took Quinones-Herstad into custody. He was arrested by the West Allis police in connection with the fatal stabbing in Aurora.
Sentence and Credit for Time Served
The Kane County State's Attorney's Office announced that Quinones-Herstad received a 38-year prison sentence. He is required to serve the full 38-year term. Court records show he was credited with 1,243 days served in the Kane County jail toward his sentence.
