Federal Indictment Issued in Casa Grande Synagogue Fire
A federal grand jury in Phoenix indicted 31-year-old Everardo Gregorio on November 18 after a fire damaged a synagogue and Jewish community center in Casa Grande, Arizona. The U.S. Department of Justice announced the indictment on November 20.
Federal Charge in Casa Grande Synagogue Fire
Federal officials stated that Gregorio was charged with one count of Obstruction of the Free Exercise of Religious Beliefs by Fire. The charge is connected to a March 3 fire at the Khal Chasidim Jewish Community Center.
Authorities reported that the fire caused severe damage to the synagogue. The fire also destroyed a kosher grocery store and restaurant operating inside the same building, according to the Justice Department.
Gregorio is also facing a separate arson charge filed by the Pinal County Attorney’s Office. That case remains pending.
Arrest Two Days After the Incident
The Casa Grande Police Department reported that officers arrested Gregorio on March 5. Police stated he was found near the scene when taken into custody.
Officials have not released additional information about the circumstances of the arrest. No further investigative details were included in the public statements.
Possible Penalties if Convicted
According to federal officials, Gregorio could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the federal obstruction charge. He could also be fined up to $250,000, or receive both penalties.
Court dates for the federal case have not yet been announced. The investigation continues under the direction of federal and county authorities.
