Jacksonville Bar Undergoes Major Renovation to Transform Local Nightlife
A Long-Awaited Upgrade Moves Forward
A popular local bar is finally moving ahead with a major renovation that has been years in the making. After nearly six years of planning and delays, expansion work is back on track and promises to transform the venue into a larger and more versatile destination for entertainment and community gatherings.
Expanding Space and Activating the Upstairs
The project will more than double the venue’s size, expanding its bar and restaurant area from 5,376 square feet to 9,219 square feet across two levels. The new design will introduce a covered patio and an open-air rooftop, creating fresh opportunities for live events and private gatherings.
Owner Warren Merrill expressed excitement about the next phase of the business, saying, “We finally get to activate the upstairs and enhance the business with our own events.” For the first time since the building was purchased in 2017, the upstairs interior and patio space will be fully brought to life.
A Venue Designed for Live Music
One of the most anticipated features of the renovation is a new porch, which will allow the bar to host live music performances under the name “That Bar Live.” The addition is expected to bring a wide range of regional acts and attract larger crowds, offering something new for music lovers in the area.
The increased space will also allow the venue to accommodate more guests. Once complete, capacity will grow from about 220 people to nearly 800. This change is significant as many performers require venues with at least 500 seats, making the bar a more competitive option for top regional acts.
Construction Details and Timeline
Site plans for the expansion were recently approved, paving the way for construction to begin. Merrill is now preparing bid packages for general contractors to review. The project includes several standout features, such as garage-style doors connecting the upstairs and downstairs patios and a second-floor wrap-around walkway reminiscent of classic New Orleans architecture.
Once construction begins, the annex structure is expected to take between six and eight months to complete. During this period, careful planning will ensure that the venue maintains functionality while preparing for its larger relaunch.
Boosting Business with Entertainment
The renovation is designed not only to enhance the physical space but also to strengthen the business model. Merrill plans to host at least two live shows a month, especially during times when nearby entertainment is not scheduled. The focus will be on Top 40 country acts, appealing to a wide demographic and ensuring consistent attendance.
Looking Ahead
With its expanded footprint, upgraded amenities, and focus on live entertainment, the bar is positioned to become a standout destination in the local nightlife scene. The renovation represents more than just physical changes—it signals a commitment to creating a vibrant community hub where music, food, and atmosphere come together.
