Jacksonville Teen Charged After Younger Brother Accidentally Shoots Himself
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office reported on Monday that a 16-year-old boy has been taken into custody in connection with a shooting incident involving his 7-year-old brother on the city’s Northside. The arrest follows an event that occurred less than a week earlier, when the younger child accidentally shot himself with a firearm located in his older brother’s bedroom.
According to investigators, the teen was apprehended and placed in the Duval County Jail the day after he allegedly attempted to conceal the firearm. Authorities said the boy’s parents were not aware that the weapon was in their home. The charges against him include culpable negligence and tampering with evidence.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office emphasized in its statement that, based on the current investigation, there is no indication that the children’s parents bear responsibility for the shooting.
The incident took place on Thursday along Lem Turner Road near Capper Road. Responding officers found the 7-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower abdomen. At that time, police did not release any identifying details about the victim but confirmed that he had been transported to a hospital for treatment.
On Monday, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office shared through its official social media channels that the child had undergone surgery as a result of the injury. Medical officials have determined his condition is stable, and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Authorities used the announcement to stress the importance of open discussions between parents and children about the dangers of firearms. They encouraged families to ensure guns are stored safely and to educate children on proper safety practices to prevent such incidents.
