Detroit Teen Shot in Leg, Suspect Detained After Three-Hour Police Standoff
On Saturday, August 2, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the leg during an argument in Detroit, according to police. The shooting occurred around 3 p.m. on the 14000 block of Mark Twain Street.
The injured teen was taken to the hospital with wounds that were not considered life-threatening.
Authorities later identified the alleged shooter as a man in his 30s. He was taken into custody following a standoff with law enforcement that lasted approximately three hours.
“Our 2nd Precinct officers did an outstanding job identifying the suspect, locating him, and securing the premises,” said Captain Sederick Dunbar of the Detroit Police Department on Saturday night. “They then coordinated with our metropolitan division, which includes the special response team, crisis negotiators, tactical services, and K-9 units.”
Two relatives of the suspect were inside the residence during the standoff. Police confirmed that neither was injured.
Captain Dunbar stated that the suspect and the teen did not know each other prior to the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Saturday’s event followed another shooting less than 24 hours earlier on Friday night, in which a 13-year-old boy was killed and his 13-year-old stepbrother was wounded near Anglin and East Lantz streets in Detroit.
“The community is outraged and tired of youth being the target of gun violence,” said Deputy Chief Franklin Hayes on Friday.
Authorities are offering a $5,000 reward for any information that helps move the Friday night case forward.
