Phoenix Unveils New Era in Transit with Launch of South Central Light Rail Extension

A Day of Celebration for Thousands

Over 5,000 residents gathered on June 7 to celebrate a major milestone in Phoenix’s journey toward becoming a more connected and sustainable city — the official launch of the South Central Extension and Downtown Hub of the Valley Metro light rail system.

This 8.9-kilometer extension represents a new chapter in public transportation for the region, combining accessibility, modern infrastructure, and eco-conscious design into one transformative project.

A New Route Connecting Communities

The newly opened extension runs from the heart of Downtown Phoenix southward to Baseline Road, following the Central Avenue and 1st Avenue corridors. With the addition of eight new stations, the line improves access to key areas, making commutes easier and faster for thousands of people.

To accommodate commuters, the project includes a 110-space park-and-ride facility, dedicated bike lanes, pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, and extensive landscaping. More than 550 trees have been planted along the route, using desert-friendly designs to enhance shade and improve the urban environment.

Light Rail Network Gets a Two-Line Upgrade

With the completion of the extension, Phoenix's light rail network has been split into two distinct lines:

Line A now serves the east-west route.

Line B runs along the new north-south corridor.

Both lines intersect at the Downtown Phoenix Hub, creating a more seamless and efficient system that better serves the city's growing population.

Major Investment with Federal Support

The South Central Extension came at a cost of $1.34 billion, with more than half of the funding covered by federal grants. The project was designed by AECOM and constructed by Kiewit, both key players in large-scale infrastructure.

To support the expanded network, Siemens Mobility supplied an additional 14 S700 light rail vehicles, adding to the fleet of 11 ordered in 2017.

More Than Just Transit

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego highlighted the broader benefits of the extension. “This project brings more than just trains and tracks,” she said. “It delivers safer streets, better bike lanes, public art, and much-needed shade — all while linking residents to jobs, schools, and entertainment across the city.”

The South Central Extension is expected to increase daily ridership by over 8,000 passengers, adding to the system’s current average of 32,000 daily journeys. These numbers reflect the city's growing reliance on sustainable transit options.

Looking Toward the Future

This expansion marks a turning point for Phoenix’s transit vision. City leaders and residents alike see it as a foundation for future growth. “This is a magical moment in Phoenix’s history,” said one city representative. “As we look toward expanding westward and enhancing our streetcar lines in the East Valley, this project proves what’s possible when we invest in ourselves.”

The success of the South Central Extension stands as a testament to what comprehensive planning, community engagement, and strategic funding can achieve. As Phoenix continues to grow, its commitment to clean, accessible, and innovative transportation is shaping a stronger, more united city for all.
