Birmingham Delight as Stirchley Cafe Owner Celebrates City's Best Cafe Title
In the heart of Stirchley, Birmingham, a humble neighbourhood cafe is now the talk of the town — and its owner, Rachel Lewis, couldn’t be happier. Her beloved Bournville Cafe has been crowned the Best Cafe in Birmingham at a prestigious national event, and the win has left her “jumping with joy.”
For Rachel, 41, this victory is more than just a trophy — it’s the reward for nearly a decade of passion, dedication and hard work. She lovingly calls her cafe her “little baby,” born from a dream she nurtured while operating a sandwich van around the city. Eight years later, that dream has not only come true but is now being recognised on a national stage.
“It was a total surprise,” Rachel said, reflecting on her unexpected win at the UK Small Business Awards earlier this month. “We went without any expectations. Just being there was exciting, but when our name was announced, it was absolutely unreal.”
The awards, which receive thousands of entries annually, celebrate small business excellence across the UK. Rachel’s win now secures her a spot in the grand finals this December — where a national certificate of recognition and a major trophy await.
Bournville Cafe isn’t just winning awards — it’s also attracting big names. Last year, comedian Joe Lycett filmed a segment of his comedy show at the cafe, creating a buzz that still draws curious visitors. Rachel fondly remembers his visit, calling him “a lovely guy” who promised to return for his signature omelette.
Since then, the cafe’s charm and character have caught the attention of more production crews, with plans for future shoots already in the works. But for Rachel, the real magic lies in the everyday joy her cafe brings.
“We’re a down-to-earth place,” she said. “People come here to laugh, relax, and share a meal. It’s about community — always has been.”
From homemade chips that locals travel miles for to the friendly banter of her staff, Bournville Cafe has become a sanctuary for regulars and newcomers alike. Rachel hopes this is just the beginning of a long and heartwarming journey.
“It never feels like work,” she smiled. “It feels like home.”
