Unpredictable Weather Strikes Dehradun: Storm Leaves City in the Dark
On Sunday evening, Dehradun was caught off guard by a sudden shift in weather, turning calm skies into a chaotic storm. The wind picked up fiercely, leading to damage across the city. Subhash Nagar Chowk saw a power pole topple, and the storm caused widespread disruptions, leaving half of the city without electricity. Trees were uprooted, and dust-filled winds made it nearly impossible to move around.
The city was thrown into darkness, with power outages affecting various areas due to electrical faults caused by the storm. The high winds, accompanied by dust, created an atmosphere of panic as people rushed to find shelter indoors. Even on the roads, pedestrians and two-wheeler riders quickly sought refuge in shops and safe spaces as the storm intensified.
The impact on electricity supply was significant, with multiple faults reported throughout the city. In some areas, precautionary power cuts were implemented by the electricity department to prevent further damage. The winds caused an electrical explosion on Patel Nagar Carriage Road, knocking out a transformer and leading to a temporary power loss. Another transformer, located near the LIC building in Nehru Colony, exploded, sparking a fire that caused widespread power failure in the surrounding areas.
Energy teams worked tirelessly to restore power, but many parts of the city faced intermittent supply throughout the night. Residents of areas like Shiv Vihar in the Jakhan region reported that their electricity was only restored after several hours. Despite the challenges, the energy department teams remained on-site, repairing the damage and reconnecting power lines.
The storm left a trail of destruction in its wake, highlighting the vulnerability of Dehradun's infrastructure to such unpredictable weather events. While the teams worked through the night, the city is still recovering from the sudden disruption.
