LA Metro Advances D Line Subway Extension Milestones to Century City and Accelerates Westwood Stations

LA Metro Reaches Critical Engineering Milestones on the 9-Mile D Line Subway Extension

LOS ANGELES, California — In the most consequential expansion of rapid transit on the West Coast, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) is delivering pivotal structural and systems integration milestones on the landmark D Line (formerly Purple Line) Subway Extension Project. Spanning nine miles beneath the dense Wilshire Boulevard transit spine, the multi-billion-dollar infrastructure undertaking extends high-capacity subterranean heavy rail from Koreatown through Miracle Mile, Beverly Hills, and Century City to Westwood and the VA Medical Center.

Following the successful commissioning of Section 1—which introduced brand-new underground stations at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax adjacent to Museum Row and LACMA, and Wilshire/La Cienega—engineering crews have accelerated heavy mechanical, electrical, and architectural fit-outs across Section 2 and Section 3 to ensure network-wide transit readiness.

Section 2 Surpasses 93 Percent Completion as Century City and Wilshire/Rodeo Near Systems Integration

Progress across the western segments highlights rapid advancements in subterranean construction and surface restoration:

  • Subterranean Box Architecture: Section 2, connecting Wilshire/La Cienega to Century City, has officially crossed past 93 percent overall completion, with heavy concrete structural pouring finished across track levels and passenger mezzanines.
  • Wilshire/Rodeo Hub: Station finishes, escalator installations, and streetscape decking restorations along Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills are advancing rapidly toward comprehensive testing phases.
  • Century City/Constellation Station: Structural civil works beneath Avenue of the Stars are substantially complete, preparing trackbeds for electrification, automated train control cabling, and communications systems.
  • Westwood Multi-Entrance Logistics: Section 3 works at Westwood/UCLA and Westwood/VA Hospital have achieved over 85 percent completion, securing heavy foundation retaining walls and passenger entrance portals designed to serve over 50,000 daily university students, medical staff, and patients.

Transit-Oriented Densification and Regional Congestion Relief

The D Line extension forms the centerpiece of Los Angeles County's Twenty-Eight by '28 transportation initiative, synchronized directly with regional housing goals and transit-oriented development zoning around station portals. By slashing peak-hour travel times between Downtown Los Angeles and Westwood from over an hour in gridlocked traffic down to just 25 minutes on high-speed electric heavy rail, the project eliminates tens of thousands of daily automobile trips from the congested I-10 and I-405 freeway corridors.

Through disciplined engineering oversight, federal infrastructure partnership, and aggressive subterranean execution, Los Angeles is cementing a world-class, high-capacity mass transit network designed to ensure equitable economic mobility and long-term environmental sustainability.
