Generational 5.6-Mile Transit Expansion Secures Landmark Federal Funding

CHICAGO, Illinois — Marking the most significant rapid transit investment in the modern history of Chicago's Far South Side, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and the City of Chicago have finalized a landmark $1.97 billion Full Funding Grant Agreement (FFGA) with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) under the Capital Investment Grants (CIG) program. The historic federal award secures the foundational capital required to construct the transformative $3.6 billion Red Line Extension (RLE) project, extending heavy-rail subway service 5.6 miles south from the existing 95th/Dan Ryan terminal down to 130th Street.

Executed under the leadership of the Chicago Transit Board and municipal infrastructure planners, the project awards its primary design-build contract to Walsh-VINCI Transit Community Partners. By extending high-capacity heavy rail into historically disinvested South Side neighborhoods, the RLE fulfills a half-century civic commitment to transit equity, connecting dozens of residential communities directly to economic hubs, universities, and commercial corridors across metropolitan Chicago.

Four State-of-the-Art, Multimodal Stations Connecting Far South Side Communities

The 5.6-mile alignment incorporates four brand-new, architecturally distinctive passenger stations engineered to deliver seamless regional transit access:

  • 103rd Street Station: An elevated multimodal transit center near 103rd and Eggleston, serving the Roseland and Washington Heights communities with dedicated multi-bay bus loading zones.
  • 111th Street Station: Situated near 111th and Michigan Avenue, establishing an accessible transit anchor for the Roseland commercial corridor and the nearby Pullman National Historical Park.
  • Michigan Avenue Station: Located near 116th and Michigan Avenue, facilitating pedestrian accessibility and catalyzing transit-oriented mixed-use redevelopment across West Pullman.
  • 130th Street Terminal Station: The expansive southern terminus situated adjacent to the Altgeld Gardens community, featuring a multi-route regional bus turnaround, extensive pedestrian esplanades, and a 1,000-vehicle park-and-ride commuter lot.

Advanced Civil Engineering, Rail Yard Infrastructure, and Universal Accessibility

Engineered with a combination of modern elevated viaducts and ground-level ballasted track sections, the RLE corridor incorporates state-of-the-art civil infrastructure. A new train storage yard and heavy maintenance shop constructed near 120th Street will provide maintenance bays, automated train wash equipment, and staging capacity for up to 104 CTA railcars, significantly boosting network-wide operational resilience.

Every station along the extension is engineered for 100 percent ADA universal accessibility under CTA’s All Stations Accessibility Program (ASAP). Station amenities feature dual redundant glass elevator enclosures, radiant platform heating units designed for sub-zero Midwestern winters, full-coverage weather canopies, digital real-time arrival screens, and high-resolution CCTV security surveillance networks.

Slashing Commute Times and Catalyzing Transit-Oriented Economic Revitalization

The Red Line Extension fundamentally rewrites mobility metrics for Far South Side commuters. End-to-end trips from the 130th Street terminal to the downtown Chicago Loop will take under 45 minutes—slashing peak-hour travel times by up to 30 minutes in each direction compared to multi-leg bus transfers and surface road gridlock.

Beyond transit speed, the project is projected to generate over 25,000 direct and indirect design and construction jobs while anchoring city-sponsored Transit Support Area development plans. By unlocking equitable access to employment, education, and healthcare, the Red Line Extension stands as a benchmark of inclusive urban infrastructure in the United States.
