Metroselskabet Launches €1.35 Billion Tenders for Copenhagen's Driverless M5 Metro Line Linking Harbour Zones
Historic Procurement Kick-Off for Copenhagen's Next Automated Metro Corridor
COPENHAGEN, Denmark — In an unprecedented investment in Nordic rapid transit and low-carbon urban mobility, municipal transit operator Metroselskabet and the City of Copenhagen (Københavns Kommune) have officially opened international competitive bidding for the landmark €1.35 billion (DKK 10 billion) M5 Metro Line project. Publishing two major contract packages, the milestone moves Copenhagen's fifth automated metro line from environmental planning into active construction procurement, laying the framework to link Copenhagen Central Station directly to emerging eastern harbour growth zones.
The tender launch arrives as Copenhagen’s existing driverless metro network experiences historic patronage, shattering previous records by transporting over 135 million passengers annually across lines M1, M2, M3 Cityringen, and the newly extended M4 South line to Sydhavn and Valby. The M5 line is engineered as an independent, high-capacity subterranean bypass designed to alleviate severe rush-hour passenger bottlenecks across the central harbour corridor while providing direct rail transit to major redevelopment districts across Amager and the eastern portlands.
€800 Million Civil Tunnels and Five Underground Stations from Central Station to Prags Boulevard
The largest contract package—valued at approximately €800 million—encompasses primary civil engineering works along the southern section of Phase 1. The winning joint venture will deploy giant Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines to bore 6.5 kilometres of twin underground running tunnels deep through Copenhagen's limestone bedrock, executing delicate subterranean undercrossings beneath active harbour channels and historic rail infrastructure.
The civil scope entails the construction of five brand-new, deep underground passenger stations: København H (Central Station), Bryggebroen, DR Byen, Amagerbrogade Syd, and Lergravsparken, terminating at a signature elevated viaduct station at Prags Boulevard Øst. The stations will incorporate spacious underground concourses illuminated by sculpted natural skylight prisms, robust waterproofing barriers compliant with strict harbour storm surge protections, and seamless subterranean pedestrian interchanges connecting passengers to S-train lines, Danish State Railways (DSB) regional trains, and Metro lines M1, M2, and M3.
€550 Million Fully Automated Driverless Trainsets and GoA4 CBTC Signalling
Tendered as a complementary turnkey package valued at roughly €550 million, the railway systems contract includes the delivery of next-generation Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) unattended driverless trainsets, complete trackwork, electrical traction power grids, and digital Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signaling systems. The advanced signaling platform will allow autonomous trains to run safely with ultra-frequent headways of just 90 seconds during peak commuting windows.
Continuing Copenhagen's world-leading safety architecture, every station on the M5 will be fitted with continuous, full-height tempered glass Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) along the platform edges. These automated screen doors synchronize seamlessly with train doors, eliminating track falls, preventing tunnel drafts, and optimizing subterranean heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning efficiency.
Anchoring Lynetteholm and Denmark’s Climate-Neutral Transit Future
Danish transport ministers, urban planners, and environmental advocates emphasized that the M5 line represents the vital transit backbone necessary to unlock Copenhagen's long-term urban masterplan. While Phase 1 delivers rapid connections to Prags Boulevard by 2036, Phase 2 will push the driverless alignment further northeast to service the cultural hub of Refshaleøen and Denmark's monumental Lynetteholm artificial island development, which will house over 35,000 residents and protect the city from sea-level rise.
By providing clean, reliable, and frequent electrified rapid transit, the M5 line will replace an estimated tens of thousands of daily car journeys across Copenhagen's metropolitan road network. Coupled with 100 percent renewable wind energy powering the electric trains, the M5 stands as an indispensable pillar in achieving Copenhagen’s legally binding statutory goal to become the world’s first carbon-neutral capital city.
