Metroselskabet Kicks Off Major International Tendering for M5 Line

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Danish transit authority Metroselskabet has officially initiated the competitive international procurement phase for the landmark Copenhagen Metro M5 project, publishing major tender packages for civil tunneling and automated driverless train systems valued at over €1.35 billion. Following the definitive granting of the Section 25 environmental permit by the Copenhagen City Council (Borgerrepræsentationen), the tendering milestone advances the initial phase of the line, which will link Copenhagen Central Station (København H) across the harbor to Prags Boulevard East.

The project represents the next generation of Copenhagen's award-winning transit infrastructure, engineered to provide high-capacity, turn-up-and-go urban mobility while supporting sustainable residential and commercial development across expanding harbor precincts.

Binding Mandate to Slash Construction Carbon Emissions by 50%

Setting an unprecedented sustainability benchmark for European megaprojects, Metroselskabet has embedded strict, legally binding climate targets into all procurement documentation: bidding consortia must prove that their engineering solutions will halve the carbon footprint of the M5 line compared to previous metro construction projects.

To meet this aggressive standard, contractors are required to incorporate ultra-low-carbon geopolymer cements, recycled structural steel, electric zero-emission tunneling machinery, and optimized slim-profile tunnel lining rings that drastically minimize excavation volumes and embodied material carbon during Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) operations.

Driverless GoA4 Rolling Stock and High-Frequency Service

The comprehensive transport systems package encompasses next-generation Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) driverless electric trainsets, advanced computerized Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signaling, and full-height glass platform edge doors across all underground and elevated stations. Operating with rush-hour headways of under two minutes, the line will deliver frictionless reliability for tens of thousands of daily commuters.

The M5 line is designed as an integral multimodal connector, offering rapid passenger interchanges with the existing M1, M2, M3 Cityringen, and M4 lines, as well as Danish State Railways (DSB) regional rail and S-train commuter networks, relieving severe passenger congestion across central harbor transit corridors.

Catalyzing Sustainable Growth and Lynetteholm Flood Resilience

In addition to serving established residential areas, the M5 line will serve as the indispensable transit spine for Lynetteholm, Copenhagen’s visionary climate-resilience and urban expansion island designed to provide regional storm surge flood protection alongside sustainable housing for up to 35,000 residents.

With commercial contract awards scheduled following comprehensive technical evaluations, early ground enablement and utility relocations are slated to ramp up steadily toward targeted commercial revenue operations in 2036, cementing Copenhagen’s status as a global pioneer in carbon-neutral mass transit.
